Fairest of the Fair Competition to Celebrate 40th Anniversary
The 2008 Fond du Lac County Fair marks the 40 th year of the Fond du Lac County Fairest of the Fair competition. This year's winner will be crowned Wednesday, July 16, in the grandstand at 6:30 p.m... The 2007 Fairest of the Fair, Kristin Natzke will be on hand to crown the 40 th Fairest of the Fair, as well as Sue (Kottke) Boyke who served as the very first Fond du Lac County Fairest of the Fair in 1968.
Boyke, who now resides in Pewaukee with her husband, Dale, has three grown children and is employed with Stein's Gardens and Gifts. About her reign as the first Fairest of the Fair, Boyke said, "the prestige and excitement that came with the privilege of representing Fond du Lac County gave me the opportunity to meet many people, and helped build my self confidence to speak in public. This title gave me the opportunity to greet the public and to promote the importance and value of the County Fair to our youth and our community. I would recommend young people take the opportunity to experience the competition, with the possibility of holding the honor of being the newest Fairest of the Fair."
Fairest of the Fair Coordinator and Fair Board Secretary, Rose Boyke explained, "each year the Fairest program continues to grow with quality contestants. This program would not be possible without the support from local businesses. We are lucky to have educational scholarships available to the top three contestants. Horicon Bank will award a $750 scholarship to the winner and $250 to the first runner-up. Oakfield Lions will award $100 to the second runner-up.
The competition is open to any person 18 years of age or older who resides in Fond du Lac County. The contestants are judged on their application, as well as group and individual interviews. They will also be asked an impromptu question the evening of the finals. The Fairest of the Fair would serve as the ambassador for the 2008 Fond du Lac County Fair which runs from July 16-20. She would also represent the fair in various media and promotional events throughout the year. The Fairest would also be asked to participate in local community activities where she would be the official voice for the fair. She would also compete for the State Fairest of the Fair title in January.
Applications are available through the fair office at 920-929-3168 or online at www.fonddulaccountyfair.com and are due on June 21 to the fair office. Questions may be directed to Rose Boyke at (920) 923-2189.
